Around the Point - March 2024

Around the Point - Newsletter Graphic March 2024
Welcome to the March 2024 edition of Around the Point, the Town of West Point’s official newsletter. Along with our social media and website, this is another tool to keep you informed about happenings around town and with your local government. If you haven’t subscribed to news and alerts from our new website, please take a minute to do so here.

Thank you to everyone who voted in our West Point Farmers Market poster contest. We are proud of the students who participated—each poster showcases the unique creativity and talent of our Pointers. Winners of the contest will be announced via social media.

And now, a few notes about what’s happening around the Point:

  • We continue to receive reports about litter, damage, and general misuse of public property, including Town Park, the Riverwalk, and The Pavilion. Please treat your public property with respect. This includes supervising children on the playground and cleaning up after your pets. Town staff will be monitoring use of these spaces. Please contact Town Hall to report any concerns: 804-843-3330, wpreception@west-point.va.us, or 802 Main Street.
  • At our regular Town Council Meeting on Tuesday, February 27th, Town Council adopted Ordinance No. 04-2023 which amends the West Point Town Code with respect to fowl. You may view the ordinance at the end of this newsletter or at Town Hall. Those wishing to apply for grandfathering may visit west-point.va.us/applications and download Fowl Ordinance Grandfather Application located under Online Services. The deadline to submit your application is Friday, May 31st. Town Council expresses gratitude to our community for feedback provided during this process. Ordinance No. 04-2023 was developed with input from our residents and significantly modified from its original proposal as a result.
  • Save the dates for 2024’s Food Trucks by the River events and Jammin’ On the Point concerts: visitwestpointkingwilliam.com/events. Event lineups are taking shape—stay tuned!
  • Planning for our 16th Annual Chesty Puller Memorial Twin Bridge 10K is in full swing. Early bird registration ends March 28th, so be sure to sign up soon at chestypuller10k.com. If you are interested in sponsoring the 10K, participating as a vendor, or volunteering your time, please contact Melissa Anderson at 804-843-3330 or manderson@west-point.va.us.
  • The West Point Farmers Market will tentatively open on Saturday, May 18th (8am to Noon at The Pavilion at Riverwalk Park). If you are interested in becoming a vendor, visit west-point.va.us/farmersmarket to download the vendor application.
  • Spring sports have started for our Pointers. Please be mindful of student athletes jogging around the school complex along Chelsea Road and Mattaponi and Magnolia Avenues.
  • West Point Middle School has been named a School to Watch by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform. Congratulations to the staff, administration, students, and families for this prestigious recognition.

Finally, with warmer weather and Daylight Savings Time on the way (don’t forget to spring ahead on Sunday, March 10th), our kayak rental kiosk at West Point Creek is out of hibernation and ready for you to enjoy. Learn more about paddling our waterways here, and be sure to follow all safety guidelines before you launch.

Sincerely,
Jack Lawson
